2010, "Formalism"
Formalism = Conceptualism
Process and materiality result in historical mark-making. Mark-making becomes indexed and self referential, process and materials are arbitrary. It is okay to be beautiful.
2010, "Conceptualism"
Aesthetic superficiality > Concept
Derived presentation methods and aesthetic modes dominate meaning. Art objects signify signifiers. Language is rendered as useless.
Two observations:
1. Aesthetic "beauty" is okay.
2. Use of language to interpret objects inhibits potential.
